 Varaždin has one of the best collections of intact Baroque buildings in Europe, earning it the nickname of Croatia's 'Little Vienna'. As the capital of Croatia for twenty years (1756-1776), religious orders, noble families and wealthy tradesmen brought in the best architects and painters in the country to build palaces and mansions. A fire in 1776 destroyed much of the city and resulted in the capital being moved back to Zagreb.

 

Stroll through the picturesque town square, home to Europe's oldest town hall, where the Saturday changing of the guard takes place (May-Oct). Pass by the Jesuit monastery and admire the baroque cathedral. Wander through elegant streets, discover hidden courtyards and visit the World of Insects in one of the palaces. In Stari Grad, discover the medieval fortress, now the Varaždin City Museum with over 1100 exhibits. The grass-covered walls and the watchtower, are a reminder of its rich history too.

 

Varaždin has a quirkiness about it too. This is reflected in the Museum of Angels and the metal art gallery, a courtyard and house filled with metal souvenirs of all shapes, themes and sizes, made by the remarkable Miroslav Prikratki. You might also even come across the official organ grinder of Varaždin on your adventure! You'll pass by the Square of Traditional Crafts and learn all about the Guild Signs that represent craftsmen of years gone by.
